A is A Piano Service

David Dunn, Registered Piano Technician - Piano Technician’s Guild

My background revolves almost entirely around music, and includes degrees in Voice Performance (Augustana (IL) College), String Bass Performance (UMass/Amherst), Post-grad studies in Jazz and Jazz Pedagogy (University of Northern Colorado), and fifteen years of teaching music at the college level (University of WI/Stevens Point, University of Northern Iowa, Southwestern CC School for Music Vocations, and Highland (IL) Community College).

In August of 2008 I successfully completed the rigorous one-year program at the Chicago School for Piano Technology.  The excellent instructors there helped me develop skills that serve me well, as well as a desire to continue furthering my knowledge in service of the true Craft of piano technology.  In October of 2008 and February of 2009 I passed the examinations required by the Piano Technicians Guild to become a Registered Piano Technician.

In the summer of 2009 I worked as a piano technician at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, MA.  This is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, nearly 200 Fellowship recipients, and dozens of internationally renowned faculty, including piano legends Emmanuel Ax, Garrick Ohlsson, and Peter Serkin.

In December, 2010, I accepted the position of Staff Piano Technician and Maintenance Coordinator for the School of Music at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.  This is a nationally-recognized program with over 300 music majors, four full-time piano faculty members, and is home to over 120 pianos.

My passion for music informs my work; my desire as a technician is to enable others to discover music at the keys of a well-functioning piano.
